"Old Black Hat"
By Smiley Burnette
In 1964, while Smiley and Stephen were doing yard maintenance around
Smiley's studio, Stephen asked his Dad how he would like to be
remembered. Smiley stated that he hadn't given that much thought,
and proceeded to go into his studio while Stephen continued watering.
In just a short while, Smiley emerged with the following poem:
Just in case that image is hard to read, here's another copy:
AN OLD BLACK HAT WITH OUT SHAPE OR SHINE
NOT WORTH THE PRICE OF A MEAL BUT THE VALUES NOT MEASURED IN THE SELLING
PRICE IT ALL IN THE WAY YOU FEEL
YOU'RE A SYMBOL OF LAUGHTER, THE
SIGN OF THE CLOWN DEDICATED TO CHILDREN AND JOY TO BE MEASURED BY
GOODNESS AND NOT BY THE GOODS YOU MEAN TO A GIRL AND A BOY
WE'VE
STOOD ALL ALONE IN THE ARENA SPOT AND HEARD THE THOUSANDS CHEER WE'VE
HELD THE HAND AND SUNG TO A CHILD WHO WAS ABOUT TO LEAVE US HERE
NO OSCARS OR EMMIES IN THE TROPHY CASE NO CITATIONS OR HONORS WON THE
WORLDS ACCLAIM YOU CAN'T EXPECT GOD KNOWS HOW WELL WE'VE DONE
AND
WHEN THE TIME ROLLS AROUND TO GO WE DON'T WANT FOLKS TO CRY WE SPENT
OUR LIVES IN QUEST OF A LAUGH THAT'S THE WAY WE'LL SAY GOODBYE
THE
MOMENT WE REACH THE PEARLY GATES SAINT PETE WILL GRAB FOR THE PHONE
AND ON THE INTERCOM YOU'LL HEAR HEY, KIDS, OLE FROG IS HOME
I'LL
GRAB THAT HARP AND RIDE ON IN SIX GUN AND EVERYTHING AND A MILLION
JILLION LITTLE ANGELS WILL SMILE WHEN OLE FROG SIGNS
